(KUTV) One man is in critical condition and another is in police custody after a fight led to a stabbing near Salt Lake's downtown homeless shelter.
Salt Lake City Police Department said two men got into a fight near the rear of the shelter, around 200 South and 500 West. One of the men stabbed the other and then ran away.
Because of an initiative to clean up crime around the Rio Grande neighborhood, there was a heavy police presence in the area already and authorities said they caught they man they believe stabbed the victim about a block away from the confrontation.
Police said the man who was stabbed was taken to a hospital in critical condition while the man who ran has been detained while police investigate what caused the fight.
The area around the stabbing has been taped off by police while they conduct an invesigation to determine what led to the confrontation, police said. The neither of the men has been identified.
